As my key fumbled to find the lock, I felt the small oasis of sweat collecting in my palms. This was the first time I’d brought him back to my place and I was nervous he wouldn’t like my modest decor.
After what seemed like an hour — possibly two — the door creaked open to reveal the wide expanse of my living room. So barren that the couch and entertainment center were almost swallowed up by the vastness of the white walls and rugless tile floor. My face grew warm and it wasn’t until that very moment that I realized just how naked my home truly was.
Finally, he broke the semi-awkward silence…
“Are you sure you live here?”
“Of course! Why do you ask?”
“Well, you’re so fashionable and trendy. I guess I expected your home to be the same. Not some collegiate bachelor pad.”
Astonished I stared at him, but I knew he was right. My home was completely drab and uninspired when held in the light of my personality. But, after taking his comments like a full blow to the gut by a heavyweight boxer, I decided to look at it as a blank slate.
Gazing out into the living room, completely bare with not a curtain to be seen, I had an epiphany: color is your friend.
